Grandsons eh

Well today I went to watch my eldest grandson S play for his academy team against Barnet FC. It was a lovely morning if a bit cool and it was a proper lads get together with his other Grandad BB there and his young brother G and my son-in-law St there too of course. I haven’t been for a while to watch him and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rocket scientists eh

Well my old heart skipped a beat or two today when I learned that Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter had taken images showing that Beagle 2 had landed safely on Mars some 11 years ago, and had failed to function only because one of the solar-power petals had failed to deploy. Somewhere up there, there’s the soul of Britain’s most famous rocket scientist looking down and smiling today.

Oh today was a landmark in afternoon tv viewing. We had our young grandson with us and he was keeping us pretty busy but I caught about 15 minutes of Countdown. I don’t watch a lot of it these days because the latest host Nick Hewer’s a bit too earnestly dull for my taste. Though Rachel Riley’s figure work is still impressive. Continue reading

Technology eh

I think most regular readers will know I’m a huge fan of Apple’s technology and we are very fortunate to own a range of their stuff. People will also know I’m not the most capable technologically. It’s an odd thing for someone who spent 30 years working in the telecoms/mobile/broadband industries to admit to, but there you are. I spent all that time marketing services and facilities (and mostly successfully I think) about which I had little idea on how it all worked. I didn’t really care to be honest as I had enough colleagues, friends and family members who’d always get me out of a technological cul-de-sac. Thankfully.

Footballers eh

I hooked up with a very old mate from uni the other night for a beer. He’s a semi-retired Cardiff-based teacher who’s been on a 6-month assignment at a very good girls school in Kingston and we’ve been catching up a bit over that time. His contract finished at Xmas but he has sort of fallen for this part of SW London so he’s continuing to come back to do some tutoring and some rowing. He’s one of my oldest mates – well he would be given that we left Aber Uni 40 years ago – and he’s lived a life as a sports mad, red-blooded bachelor ever since.
