spurs: an up and down kind of week

So Spurs came up against a truly mighty reds side and lost a decent game 3-1 in the FA Cup 4th round. I’m interested to know how Spurs fans feel at the end of a momentous week. The win against Arsenal was long overdue and thrilling, even for a northern footie fan. But today….?

the third coming of kevin

Well as titles go that might draw in the porno crowd. Sorry to get back to football again but I’m still knocked out by the re-appointment of Kevin Keegan at Newcastle. It’s just so like Newcastle to go and do something like that. Well yesterday was their first match under KK since his return; at home to gritty Bolton, and it was awful. I wouldn’t say the honeymoon’s over but it wasn’t much of a first night was it?

Ashley makes decision on Newcastle Utd manager

Tonight an inside source at St James’ Park has confirmed that owner Mike Ashley has come to a major decision about the managership of his beloved club Newcastle Utd, following today’s 6-0 thrashing by Manchester Utd – not to give the job to Nigel Pearson!

A fan’s representative said they were 99% behind the owner’s decision although he admitted there was still a core of fans who felt that Ashley should give Pearson more time…..

You’ve gotta feel for the NU fans tonight – it’s a frigging train crash happening in slow motion up there.

last roll of the dice for allardyce?

It’s looking grim up north for Sam Allardyce and his chances of remaining Newcastle Utd’s boss. After a dour draw with Derby and a loss to Wigan over the weekend, I reckon he may be hours away from the A1 and the P45. I don’t think the long-suffering Magpies fans have ever minded losing providing the team played with panache and spirit. But the quality of the football recently has been awful. Against lowly Wigan the team couldn’t muster a single shot at goal. What’s gone wrong?

big sam joining little sam?

Clutching their P45’s that is perhaps? What do you think? Allardyce wasn’t the managerial choice of new owner Mike Ashley, he spent quite a bit of money in the transfer window and after a decent start they’ve now gone 5 games picking up just one point in the process. It’s not exactly the biggest slump of all time but the toon are starting to get badly beaten; the fans are, in the words of that great observer of human nature Joey Barton, turning ‘vicious’ in their criticism of the manager and the standard of play, and yesterday it came out that a delegation of senior players led by captain Geremi are making representations to the manager about his tactics and methods. It all sounds very recent Bolton-like.

Come on England

I’ll do a better posting tomorrow but what a day to be an Englishman, with the footie and rugby teams both winning, and also a Scotsman with that incredible result against Ukraine. McFadden eh. Does he ever score a scrappy goal? And Wales lost in a seemingly empty stadium to Cyprus. The end for that plonker Toshack? But the night belongs to the England rugby team. From playing like a bunch of used French letters a few weeks ago, tonight they doused the French passion on their home turf and emerged like erect Trojans. Magnifique. Au revoir Les Bleus. And so we make a World Cup Final again. Seems incredible doesn’t it? What was I saying about surprises? Now who do we fancy in the final – my head says Argentina because they are the romantic story and if they could defeat SA, they couldn’t possibly pull off another shock in the final could they? They must be close to getting played out. And SA, who stuffed us in the Group stages? They are very dangerous but it would be nice to reverse that defeat and the one against the Boks in ’99 in Stade de France which still hurts. Oh yes….

ps What do you think of Will’s brilliant touchline commentary at the end? He’s the biz eh!

pps Did you hear about Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin group buying out the troubled Northern Rock bank? Sir Richard was asked if his company brand would also replace NR as the Newcastle U team sponsor in such an event. He came up with a quick reply that they could and that Virgin Rocks might make a suitable name. Very good Richard but surely Virgin on the Ridiculous would be more appropriate. Ha! (sorry Lawrie).
