Well I hope you all had a great Xmas. We had all our family with us – daughters, sons-in-law and grandkids and it was just great. The last time we’ll have a family Xmas here in Buckingham after some 20 years or so. Over dinner on Boxing day my daughter E set us off on what could be one of the great yuletide games. On her recent flight up to Scotland she noticed someone on the plane, with his family, whose face she recognised but couldn’t place. We’ve all had that feeling. Anyway it’s been bothering her since and over dinner she challenged everyone to help her solve the mystery.
She was sure he was an actor who appeared in a programme the kids used to enjoy in the 80’s and had watched many times over. Possibly a sit-com but certainly a series. She was also sure that the character was not a regular cast member but maybe a one-off appearance. He’d be in his late 20’s/30’s at the time of the programme and she seemed to recall him having a strong London accent.
Well we came up with a host of programmes; Brush Strokes, The Sweeney, Man About the House, Boon, Minder, Only Fools and Horses and many more but the programme which most resonated with her was Fawlty Towers. We had quite a time recalling all the young blokes in the programme who featured just once or pretty infrequently – Terry the cook, Danny the undercover detective in the very first episode, the young guy in the wedding party who was a good friend of Polly’s. We had to try and find pictures of them on the web from the series and then as they look today. Isn’t the internet wonderful?
We had high hopes for Robin ‘Poldark’ Ellis who played Danny but his current photo just wasn’t the guy who E saw. Then E herself thought about the episode with the young guy smuggling the girl into his bedroom. The episode of course is ‘The Psychiatrists’, probably the most brilliantly written IMHO. How could I forget that one? It took a while to pull up a shot of the guy flirting with Sybil at the reception desk (or was it vice versa?). Showed it to E and bingo! Yep Nicky Henson, who’s gone on to find more fame in other programmes like Eastenders etc, but it was his image from way back then that had stuck with her. Check out the classic clip below of Sybil getting all flirty and flighty.
Believe it or not we spent over an hour making suggestions and searching for relevant imagery. Pointless but great fun and E’s no longer got the nadgers.
